Washington, District of Columbia (United States of America) - "31 Miles for 31 Heroes". On August 6, 2011, a CH-47 Chinook helicopter was shot down by enemy fire in Afghanistan. This tragedy resulted in the deaths of 30 active duty military members and 1 military working dog, and left shocked and broken families in its wake. The event is considered the worst loss of life in a single incident during the Afghanistan Campaign. To celebrate the incredible lives of these fallen heroes and support their families, 31 Miles for 31 Heroes will hold memorial rucks at various locations throughout the world to honor the lives of the Heroes of Extortion 17. Participants will carry 2 bricks in their rucks, one to represent the lives of our fallen and the other to represent the burden carried by their families. Periodically, Ruckers stop to read the bios of these warriors and raise a drink (of water) to their memories. All funds raised will benefit 31Heroes, a non-profit which serves to impact the lives of our nation's heroes and their families, while remembering the fallen. August 1st-31st - 31 Days for 31Heroes - This is an option for those who may not have the time, ability, or desire to take on all 31 miles in one go. Mount St. Helens, Washington (United States of America) - "Volcanic 50". Race on an active volcano! Volcanic is a rugged, remote, and challenging 50K+ and a 25K on Mt. St. Helens in Washington State. The 50K course runs entirely on single-track trails, circumnavigating the entire mountain. All but 4.5 miles are run on the Loowit Trail. Racers scramble over boulder fields, cross rivers, run through the blast zone, as well as through dense forest - all with ever-changing views of the volcano. The course is 32 miles and feels more like a 50-miler. In all, this Mt. St. Helens race has approximately 7,400 feet of elevation gain and 7,400 feet of loss. It's tough, but so are you! The brand new 25K gives runners a real Mt. St. Helens experience without having to run all the way around the volcano. This course includes some of the iconic features of the longer race - boulder fields, the Loowit trail, jaw-dropping views of the mountain and the surrounding Cascades, and lush forests. There's 3,200 feet of gain and loss. Both races start and finish at the Marble Mountain Sno Park. www.gobeyondracing.com/races/volcanic-50
