The "Cool 100" is an international wilderness ultra marathon and will be run on the Karelian Isthmus of North West Russia. The event has the support of the government of St Petersburg and Leningrad District, and the Federation of Track and Field Athletics of Russia. Designed to be Eastern Europe's top endurance race, the 100 mile course is run in extreme winter conditions and over rough terrain, following the narrow pine forest paths and trails winding between beautiful lakes and rocks, crossing streams and small rivers, and crossing the ice of some of the frozen lakes. The participants will meet in St Petersburg on Wednesday 5th May, 2004 and may take a tour of the city which is currently celebrating its 300 year anniversary. There will be a range of activities, sightseeing tours and a race party prior to the start of the race. In the afternoon of Friday 7th May the participants will be transferred to the historical town of Priozersk to the start of the course. The race will commence that evening, and the course will close at 06.00 on Monday 10th May. During this time there will be a prize giving ceremony for the race winners. The participants have the chance to take in the local attractions in St Petersburg after being transferred there from the finish line on Monday 10th May. For more details see www.coolseries.com.
