New starting location and more food await! Due to the increased popularity of the event over the last few years (we nearly doubled the registrants in one year!), steps have been made to procure a new starting location on Sauvie Island. Our new location will begin and end at the Pumpkin Patch on the South side of the island. This should provide less congestion between the participants and the traffic and should allow all of the course to remain on level pavement. Translation: An even FASTER course with even more space to play after the race! The new Sauvie Island bridge will be finished by 2009, which means we've still got one more year of bottlenecks to contend with before they install the beautiful new bridge. Thus, carpooling is still highly recommended. The "Flat," as we affectionately call it, has become a Fourth of July tradition around Portland. The course, as the name implies, is about the flattest and fastest half and full marathon on the West Coast. But in addition to the fast times expected from completing this event, runners and walkers will be treated to the beautiful sights of Sauvie Island, including thousands of songbirds, majestic bald eagles, and picturesque farmland that most of the island residents subsist off of. Oh yeah, don't forget the island-fresh strawberry shortcake! Not only is it scrumptious, but the islanders themselves serve it to you. Be sure to thank them and shake these wonderful people's hands! The course, which is run clockwise around the island, is completely flat besides a short "bump" at the beginning to get onto the circuitous Sauvie Island Road. Both the half marathon and full marathon are USATF certified courses and the marathon is a Boston Qualifier. Come run your fastest time of the season, the year, or your entire life! Relax in the abundant grass under the boughs of shady fir trees in the park. Picnic tables, and acres of lush grass await a relaxed Fourth of July morning and afternoon on the island. Play frisbee, stretch in the shade, or just lie down! In addition to the scrumptious island strawberry shortcake join the big Potluck BBQ, hosted by the Red Lizard Running Club. It's a potluck so the food choices are too numerous to list and is only limited by your imagination. Entry Fees for Half Marathon: $40 through June 15th, $45 day of race. Entry Fees for the Full Marathon: $65 through June 15th, $70 day of race. The race starts at the historic Howell Bybee House and heads out for one loop around the island on a two lane country road. Marathoners will be treated to two loops and lots of aid stations. There will be an electrolyte drink supplied on the course in addition to water and we've added yet another aid station to make sure participants get even more support on the course.
