Ieper (Belgium) - "In Flanders Field Marathon". The In Flanders Fields Marathon is a unique and meaningful race held in the Westhoek region of Belgium, known for its historical significance as the course runs through the IJzervallei, an area that saw heavy fighting during World War I. Taking place on September 20, 2026, the marathon starts in Diksmuide and finishes in Ypres, covering 42.195 kilometers. It is more than just a race; it is a tribute to peace and remembrance, with participants running in memory of those who lost their lives in the war while supporting various charitable causes. Known as one of the flattest and most scenic marathons in Belgium, it offers a unique and emotional experience. Their slogan, “here you are the vedette,” is reflected in the warm welcome participants receive, and in 1999 the iffmarathon became the first marathon in the world to print participants’ first names on their bibs. It is also the cheapest official marathon in Belgium, and the entry fee includes not only supplies, bib number, and timing but also a unique runner’s singlet and a distinctive medal. The route passes through significant World War I sites, including the Dodengang (Trench of Death), Yser Tower, John McCrae memorial, and various battlefields, with mostly flat terrain accessible to runners of all levels. There is also an official half marathon and a relay race, making it family-friendly. This year’s charity is Kom op tegen Kanker (Fight Against Cancer), and a €10 donation will add a second name to your bib, either that of an Olympian killed in WWI or a name of your choice. The marathon commemorates the soldiers who fought in World War I, serving as a reminder of the importance of peace, and every year farmers still find unexploded shells in the area. Beyond its history, the course offers views of the Flemish countryside with charming villages, fields, and waterways. The half marathon starts at 11:45 PM in Ypres, just in front of the Menin Gate, follows a loop past WWI cemeteries and memorials, and then rejoins the marathon course from Boezinge to Ypres, with a limit of 700 participants. Like the full marathon, it includes supplies, bib number, timing, a singlet, and a medal.
